چکیده

When fruit set and rainfall are sufficient, grape yields in Arkansas are high, but rain is not always sufficient in Arkansas. There is enough, in terms of inches, but it often comes at the wrong times. Records during the past 20 years have shown that in all but 3 years in Northwest Arkansas, there have been brief dry spells during the growing season that lasted for at least two or three weeks. These dry periods stress the vine and affect fruit growth, and extended dry spells play havoc with a grape crop. Fruit growers have considered grapes to be the least responsive of the fruit crops to supplemental irrigation due to their extensive root systems. However, research at the University of Arkansas has shown that what really happened over the years was that grape growers have been adjusting the fruit load (number of fruiting nodes left per vine) to a level that would allow for the crop to mature even when the annual drought occurs. Another reason that the 'Concord' producers of Northwest Arkansas have not considered using irrigation was the lack of irrigation water sources. The concept of drip irrigation conserves water and has helped to alleviate this problem.

Effects of root-zone micro-irrigation on Cabernet Sauvignon

During 2015, vines receiving season-long drip irrigation delivered into the lower root zone via hard plastic tubes yielded 70 % of commercial production while receiving only 15% of the water as the vines receiving full commercial rates of surface drip irrigation. Vines receiving direct root-zone (DRZ) irrigation at rates reduced to 60, 30, and 15% of commercial drip irrigation (DI) produced ind...

Sustaining Chili Pepper Production in Afghanistan through Better Irrigation Practices and Management

Water management and utilization is an ongoing problem in developing countries with semi-arid to arid climates such as Afghanistan. The lack of effective irrigation systems are oftentimes the most limiting factor for maximizing agricultural productivity in these countries. In Afghanistan, the most widely used irrigation methods are basin/border for cereal crops and furrow for vegetables and gra...

Assessment of Comparative Advantage of Agricultural Crops in Semnan Province Based on Water Productivity

Due to limited access to water, it is necessary to determine the comparative advantage of crops and horticultural products in different parts of the province and identify products that lack the desired productivity. Then, find ways to improve water productivity or replace products with higher comparative advantage with low-yield products. Based on this, the crop and economic productivity index ...

Soil application of neonicotinoid insecticides for control of insect pests in wine grape vineyards.

BACKGROUND Soil application of systemic neonicotinoid insecticides can provide opportunities for long-term control of insect pests in vineyards, with minimal risk of pesticide drift or worker exposure. This study compared the effectiveness of neonicotinoid insecticides applied via irrigation injection on key early-season and mid-season insect pests of vineyards in the eastern United States. R...

Response of lateral placement depths of subsurface drip irrigation on okra (Abelmoschus esculentus)

Subsurface drip irrigation is defined as application of water below the soil surface through emitters, with discharge rates generally in the same range as surface drip irrigation. It has many advantages over surface drip. To see the response of subsurface drip irrigation on okra yield, a study was conducted at Indian Agricultural Research Institute, New Delhi, India during 2003 and 2004. Okra (...
